OBJECTIVE:

To get players to quickly adapt their strategies.

EQUIPMENT:

3–4 balls.

GROUP SIZE:

Two teams of 10–15 players per side.

DRILL SET-UP:

Two teams as for a normal rugby game.

DRILL EXPLANATION:

  1. The game proceeds as for a normal rugby game.
  2. Upon a signal from the coach a second ball is thrown to an area in the field where there are no players.
  3. The first ball is now dead and the second ball is in play.
  4. The players must adapt their strategy to cope with the new ball position.
  5. The coach repeats the exercise.

COACHING POINTS:

• Quick transition necessary from the players to react to the new situation i.e. offence to defence and vice versa.
