OBJECTIVE:

To practise continuity in movement.

EQUIPMENT:

12 cones, one ball, three hit shields.

GROUP SIZE:

Seven players.

AREA:

25 x 25 metre grid.

DRILL SET-UP:

Teams of four line up in a straight line with four players holding the hit shields.

DRILL EXPLANATION:

  1. The first player in Group 1 runs to the first cone and places the ball.
  2. The second player follows, picking up the ball at the cone and placing it at the second cone.
  3. The third player follows, picking up the ball at the second cone and placing it at the third cone.
  4. The fourth player becomes the halfback while the first three players align themselves.
  5. Fourth player passes the ball out along the group.
  6. The players pass the ball along the line until they reach the next line of cones.
  7. Players form into a straight line, go around the final cone and go into contact with the hit shields, either going to ground or popping up the ball to one of the group who acts as a runner.

COACHING POINTS:

• Use proper technique when placing and picking up the ball.
• Communication.
• Focus on correct alignment and lines of running.
• Correct body position on contact with the shields.

VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:

  1. Cut-out passes.
  2. Change hit shields to tackle bags.
