Tackle and Drive
OBJECTIVE:
To practise moving quickly from a tackle to a maul situation.
EQUIPMENT:
4–5 tackle bags, 4–5 hit shields.
GROUP SIZE:
12–15 players.
AREA:
25 x 25 metre grid.
DRILL SET-UP:
4–5 players line up on line A. Opposite each player is a tackle bag (line B) and a hit shield (line C). A player holds each of these.
DRILL EXPLANATION:
- The players in line A run out together and tackle the bags at line B.
- After quickly getting to their feet they move on and drive into the shields at line C.
- When they have driven the shield to line D they turn, run back and tackle the bag at line B again and then return to line A.
- One circuit is now complete.
COACHING POINTS:
• Drill should be completed a number of times before the groups rotate roles.
• For both the tackle and drive, the first contact should be made with the shoulder and an emphasis placed on a strong leg drive.
VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:
- Position a ball on the ground two metres before the hit shield.
- Players pick up the ball before driving into the shield.
- On the way back, the players replace the ball where it was picked up.
