Looking and thinking drill
OBJECTIVE:
Tackling the correct person with head on correct side.
EQUIPMENT:
3 cones, 2 hit-shield (black and blue).
GROUP SIZE:
Three.
AREA:
Make a triangle with cones 2m apart.
DRILL SET-UP:
In 3s, 2 players hold a hit shield – one blue and one black.
DRILL EXPLANATION:
- One attacker calls “go” and the attackers holding the shields move forward, they then call a “colour”.
- The tackler adjusts the body position by taking small fast steps and getting in to a crouch.
- The head is placed on the correct side which is followed in with a big step towards the attacker, the shoulder driving in and the arms thrust through.
- Move back and repeat.
Key Coaching Points
- Keep feet alive
- Being in balance so that they can drive off either leg (crouch, small fast steps, elbows in and ready to thrust and eyes focused on the correct side.)
- Shoulder on, head in tight and arms thrusting through.
- Head on correct side.
VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:
- Make area smaller or bigger.
- Have another row of hit-shields.
