EQUIPMENT:

Eight cones, one ball.

GROUP SIZE:

Six players or more.

AREA:

10 x 15 metre grid.

DRILL SET-UP:

Three attackers line up along side three defenders as shown in the diagram.

DRILL EXPLANATION:

  1. When the coach says “go,” three attackers run around the cone on their side of the grid and attack down the channel. At the same time two defenders go around the cone on their side of the grid and defend against the attackers.
  2. The third defender must go around the furthest cone and is then able to join the two defenders.
  3. One of the attackers must score across the try-line.

COACHING POINTS:

• Communication should be emphasized with both the attacking and defending players.
• The ball carrier should provide space for the support players around them.
• Ensure players are using good pass technique.
• Talk with players about the options they used on attack and defence.

VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:

  1. Restrict the space to put more pressure on the attacking players.
  2. Increase or decrease the number of attackers versus defenders.
