OBJECTIVE:

To make up an attacking option from a turn over.

EQUIPMENT:

One ball, four tackle bags.

GROUP SIZE:

Team.

AREA:

Half to full field.

DRILL SET-UP:

Five players are required to hold the tackle bags numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Each tackle bag-holder has a ball. The remainder of the team line up in a defensive formation as for a set piece (scrum or lineout).

DRILL EXPLANATION:

  1. Use the tackle bags to simulate the positions of opposing attacking players in a backline.
  2. The coach nominates which tackle bag-holder is to release a ball.
  3. The team defends by tackling each tackle bag in turn as if the ball is being passed along the line.
  4. When the nominated tackle bag is tackled, the bag-holder releases the ball. The ball is recovered and the team turns defence into attack as they regain possession of the ball.

COACHING POINTS:

• Get to feet quickly.
• Quickly in position.
• Make space by spreading the defence.
• Talk it up in defence.
