Backline Formation Drill
SD Seniors Drills Backline Formation
OBJECTIVE:
To develop correct alignment, depth, speed and angles.
EQUIPMENT:
Two balls, four cones.
GROUP SIZE:
10-14 players in each group.
AREA:
25 x 25 metre grid.
DRILL SET-UP:
One halfback with the ball and two backlines lined out as shown in diagram.
DRILL EXPLANATION:
- The halfback at position A passes the ball, setting the Backline A backline in motion.
- As soon as the pass has been made, the halfback runs to position B, picks up the other ball, passes it and sets the Backline B backline in motion.
- Once that pass has been made, the halfback runs back to position A ready to pass to backline Backline A again.
- The backlines should regroup into an attacking formation each time the ball has been passed along the backline.
COACHING POINTS:
• Set positions A and B far enough apart to allow both backlines to run straight and finish inside the mark.
• Encourage quick realignment.
• Have players alternate positions.
• Encourage backlines to run and pass at pace.
VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:
- Have the players change positions so that they become accustomed to being out of position.
- Include extra players entering the backline to penetrate a defensive line.
