DRILL SET-UP:
Diagram.
DRILL EXPLANATION:
- Use cones to mark position of jumper.
- Ball placed at 5m intervals.
- Player to progress from ball to ball.
- Jumper to progressively take throw at 7m, 9m and 11m.
COACHING POINTS:
• Throwing to be accurate.
• Create space.
• Space is created by out-manoeuvring opponents before the throw is made i.e. by moving back, the opposition is drawn back, creating space in front; by moving forward, space is created behind.
• Move into the space on the throw so that the jump is vertical.
• Adjust arm position to prevent opponents blocking arm movement.
• Two-foot take off ideal for timing, i.e. one-foot forwards, stop together, then up.
• Drive up towards the ball by starting low and driving up with arms.
VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:
- Introduce all/more jumpers.
- Use team lineout calls.
- Jumpers to vary deliveries to halfback.
