Forward Jumping
OBJECTIVE:
Throwing the ball accurately and taking a ball above the head.
EQUIPMENT:
One ball per group.
GROUP SIZE:
4–8 players.
AREA:
10m x 5m.
DRILL SET-UP:
The hooker stands on the touchline with the ball. The rest of the group line up single file, several metres behind the 5-metre line.
DRILL EXPLANATION:
- One at a time, the front person runs forwards and jumps up and across to catch the hooker's throw.
- Upon catching the throw, the jumper returns the ball to the thrower and then joins the end of the line.
- The new front player runs forward and repeats the process.
COACHING POINTS:
• Jumpers should:
- have inside shoulder forward and inside the line of the ball so the face is directly behind the ball.
- prepare for jump with hands at chest level.
- concentrate on jumping through with the chest forward and head up.
• Arms should not be extended until the jumper reaches the top of the jump.
• The jumper jumps with hands at face height and adjusts arms to meet the ball.
VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:
If movement is too much for basic drill, start with standing, then extend with one or two steps.
