SD Tennage Drills Ruck Clean Out
OBJECTIVE:
To develop good, clean ruck ball and continue forward momentum.
EQUIPMENT:
Six hit shields, 12 cones, and 3-4 balls.
GROUP SIZE:
16-24 players.
AREA:
20 x 20 metre grid/divided into channels.
DRILL SET-UP:
Three groups of five attackers and three groups of two defenders (holding hit shields), as set out in the diagram.
DRILL EXPLANATION:
- Group 1 has to retrieve the ball and attack down the channel.
- Player 1 hits into the first pair of defenders, drops and places the ball.
- Players 2 and 3 clean out. Player 4 picks and distributes the ball to Player 5, who is the runner.
- Player 5 hits into the second pair of defenders and the roles are rotated, The drill continues.
- When Group 1 have completed the drill, they move back into channel 1 and Group 2 go on the coach's call.
- Rotate attackers and defenders.
- Change sides of attack.
COACHING POINTS:
• Ensure players are communicating regarding who is performing each role.
• Correct body position is vital with all players.
• Players must approach the ball with depth and timing.
• Decision making.
VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:
- Hit shield holders can be in tackle suits.
- Alter the number of defenders and attackers.
