OBJECTIVE:
Improve accuracy of a place kick.
EQUIPMENT:
One ball for every player.
GROUP SIZE:
Place kickers.
AREA:
Goalposts and surrounding area.
DRILL EXPLANATION:
- Right in front of the posts (close as you like) take 5 -10 shots at goal.
- Move to the left of the centre (15m) and take 5 -10 shots.
- Move to the right of the centre (15m) and take 5-10 shots.
- Move right over near the touchline of both sides and have 2-3 shots.
- Move back from the 22m and have 2-3 long shots.
- Go back to the centre if you need to.
COACHING POINTS:
• Lean the ball slightly forward to expose the “sweet spot”.
• Before moving back stand over the ball in the kicking position.
• Move back to a comfortable position.
• Concentrate on the “sweet spot”.
• Relax.
• Use imagery to picture the complete kick.
• Approach by running in an arc.
• Turn non-kicking shoulder side on to target.
• Place non-kicking foot in line with target.
• Swing through strike zone.
• Head over ball.
• Make contact with top of instep.
• Rise onto the toes of the non-kicking foot.
• Straight follow through.
• Return to balanced stance.
VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:
Increase number of shots and increase angles.
