Feed in the Tackle
OBJECTIVE:
To get an accurate pass through the tackle.
EQUIPMENT:
One ball per group.
GROUP SIZE:
10-12 players.
AREA:
10 x 40 metre channel.
DRILL SET-UP:
Up to six tacklers in single file, 5-10 metres apart down the field. The remaining players line up in a group as runners at the start line with the ball as shown in the diagram.
DRILL EXPLANATION:
- The runners run as a group.
- The initial ball-carrier runs to the first tackler and, upon contact, passes the ball to a supporting player who, in turn, runs onto the second tackler and, after contact, passes to the next support player.
- The drill continues.
- When the runners get to the end of the grid, they turn and come back down the channel.
- The runners and tacklers reverse roles.
COACHING POINTS:
• Players should run with the ball in two hands.
• Ensure support players have depth running onto the ball.
VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:
- Standing or kneeling tacklers.
- The ball-carrier either stands in the tackle or goes to the ground and places the ball.
