Game On!
No one likes training during the week only to have the match defaulted on Friday night or Saturday morning. If you're a coach you may spend your week looking for front rowers. With Game On the rugby will still kick off. If you don’t have 15 players or replacement front-rowers then you’ll be playing under Game On in 2020.
Flexible rugby rules, no defaults and more rugby.
Here’s how to play under Game On in the 2020 season.
1. Team Size
If teams don’t have 15 players the match can still go ahead. All teams need is at least 10 players.
You can play 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15 a-side depending how many players you have and how many subs you need.
2. Rolling Subs
Rolling Subs will be used during Adult Club Rugby matches, unless otherwise agreed. The Half Game rule still applies to all rugby below First XV..
3. Contested or uncontested scrums
If teams don’t have three front-rowers to start the game, scrums can be uncontested. There’s also no need to have additional front rowers as subs.
4. Match length
The match length is now flexible and can be anywhere between 40 and 80 minutes. Secondary School games remain a maximum of 70 minutes.
5. Competition Points
Rugby matches are competitive and we want to keep it that way. All matches played under Game On are for competition points. That means the result will still be determined by a good game of rugby.
6. Communication
To make sure everything runs smoothly the referee and team management will meet before kick off to confirm the Game On process. Team management are also encouraged to communicate with each other as early as possible in the days leading up to the match.
Game On will be introduced to all Provincial Unions in 2020 and both Senior Club rugby and Secondary school rugby will use Game On.
Provincial Unions may select some school and/or club grades that Game On does not apply to. For example, ‘Premier’ and First Fifteen grades.
