SD Tennage Drills From Defence To Attack
OBJECTIVE:
To make up an attacking option from a turn over.
EQUIPMENT:
One ball, four tackle bags.
GROUP SIZE:
Team.
AREA:
Half to full field.
DRILL SET-UP:
Five players are required to hold the tackle bags numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Each tackle bag-holder has a ball. The remainder of the team line up in a defensive formation as for a set piece (scrum or lineout).
DRILL EXPLANATION:
- Use the tackle bags to simulate the positions of opposing attacking players in a backline.
- The coach nominates which tackle bag-holder is to release a ball.
- The team defends by tackling each tackle bag in turn as if the ball is being passed along the line.
- When the nominated tackle bag is tackled, the bag-holder releases the ball. The ball is recovered and the team turns defence into attack as they regain possession of the ball.
COACHING POINTS:
• Get to feet quickly.
• Quickly in position.
• Make space by spreading the defence.
• Talk it up in defence.
