OBJECTIVE:
Getting the ball off the ground
EQUIPMENT:
Four balls per group
GROUP SIZE:
8+
AREA:
10m x 10m
DRILL EXPLANATION:
- Players are paired up and placed on each corner of the grid with a ball about 1-2m in front of them.
- On the coach’s signal each pair runs to the opposite corner of the grid.
- The player arriving then “baseball” slides on the ball, gets to their feet and the second quickly comes into secure and drive.
- Each pair drives in a controlled manner to the centre of the grid making contact with the other players doing the same.
- Pairs make contact in the congested grid centre and either continue to drive through the middle or roll off other pairs on their return to the starting cones.
COACHING POINTS:
• Players sliding onto the ball must get to their feet as quickly as they can.
• Control the ball.
• Support player should go around and come in directly behind the player in contact.
VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:
- Vary by different ways of picking up the ball.
- Use in tackle situation (turnover).
