Breaking the Tackle
OBJECTIVE:
To develop the skills involved in breaking a tackle.
EQUIPMENT:
2 - 4 shields.
GROUP SIZE:
5 - 10 players.
AREA:
10 x 10 metre grid.
DRILL EXPLANATION:
- Two players stand one metre apart with shields facing inwards.
- Attackers stand in single file facing the hit shields.
- Player 2 runs at the shields and receives a late pass from player 1.
- Player 2 bursts through the shields and delivers a pass back to player 1.
- Player 2 then continues up and around the cone to the back of the line.
- The drill continues.
COACHING POINTS:
• Ball is held in two hands.
• Accelerate into the gap.
• Make contact with chest or shoulders.
• Have one foot on the ground at point of contact.
VARIATIONS / PROGRESSION:
- Introduce a second shield and a second passer, hence the player will break through the first shield and immediately receive a 2nd pass to break through shield No 2.
- Avoid all obstacles by pass or evasion.
